Which Country Produces the Most Kiwi Fruit in the World?

In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the kiwi fruit output was China (2,073 thousand tonnes), accounting for 55% of global production. Moreover, kiwi fruit output in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, Italy (571 thousand tonnes), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by New Zealand with a share of 12%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of kiwi fruit producton in China stood at +7.1%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Italy (+4.0% per year) and New Zealand (+2.0% per year).

Global Kiwi Fruit Production

Global kiwi fruit production amounted to 3,746 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +8.6% against the previous year level. Overall, the global kiwi fruit output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +5.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013, when the output figure increased by +12% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global kiwi fruit production attained its maximum volume of 3,746 thousand tonnes in 2011. From 2012 to 2015, the total kiwi fruit output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global kiwi fruit production was primarily driven by disposable income growth and population growth. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the kiwi fruit output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and a moderate improvement of the yield figures.

The world kiwi fruit harvested area amounted to 242 thousand ha in 2015, which was 10.2% more than the previous year figure. The kiwi fruit harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +4.6% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total kiwi fruit harvested area peaked in 2015, and is likely to continue its expansion in the immediate term, following rising demand over the globe.
