In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the leek output was Indonesia (575 thousand tonnes), accounting for 25% of global production. Moreover, leek output in Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, Turkey (225 thousand tonnes), threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Belgium with a share of 9%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of leek producton in Indonesia stood at +2.3%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Turkey (-1.6% per year) and Belgium (+2.1% per year).

Global Leeks Production

Global leek production amounted to 2,257 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +0.9% against the previous year level. Overall, the global leek output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +4% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global leek production reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global leek production was primarily driven by growth of population. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the leek output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a measured expansion of the harvested area and a moderate improvement of the yield figures.

The world leek harvested area amounted to 132 thousand ha in 2015, which was -1.0% less than the previous year figure. The leek harvested area indicated a slight increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +1.0% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total leek harvested area peaked in 2012, falling back in the following year. From 2013 to 2015, the total leek harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
