In 2015, the countries with the highest levels of linseed production were Canada (1,081 thousand tonnes), Kazakhstan (553 thousand tonnes), China (389 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 69% of total output.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of linseed production among the main producing countries was attained by Kazakhstan (+79.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Global Linseed Production

Global linseed production amounted to 2,930 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +10.4% against the previous year level. Overall, the global linseed output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +7.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +20% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global linseed production reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global linseed production was primarily driven by popularity of healthy eating and growth of food production. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the linseed output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.

The world linseed harvested area amounted to 2,579 thousand ha in 2015, which was -1.8% less than the previous year figure. The linseed harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +3.0% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total linseed harvested area peaked in 2014, falling back in the following year.
