Which Country Produces the Most Maize in the World?

In 2015, the countries with the highest levels of maize production were the United States (415,999 thousand tonnes), China (223,477 thousand tonnes), Brazil (85,885 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 64% of total output.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of maize production among the main producing countries was attained by Brazil (+6.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Global Maize Production

Global maize production amounted to 1,139,922 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +9.8% against the previous year level. Overall, the global maize output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +4.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013, when the output figure increased by +16% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global maize production reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global maize production was primarily driven by popularity of healthy eating and growth of population. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the maize output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.

The world maize harvested area amounted to 189,270 thousand ha in 2015, which was 2.4% more than the previous year figure. The maize harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +2.3% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total maize harvested area peaked in 2015, and is likely to continue its expansion in the immediate term, following rising demand over the globe.
