Global Melon Production

Global melon production amounted to 30,492 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +2.6% against the previous year level. Overall, the global melon output pursued a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +0.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when the output figure increased by +19% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global melon production attained its maximum volume of 31,857 thousand tonnes in 2007. From 2008 to 2015, the total melon output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global melon production was primarily driven by disposable income growth and growth of population. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the melon output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a slight curtailment of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.

The world melon harvested area amounted to 1,194 thousand ha in 2015, which was almost equal to the previous year figure. The melon harvested area indicated a small contraction over the period under review, declining by an average annual rate of -0.9% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total melon harvested area peaked in 2011, falling back in the following year. From 2012 to 2015, the total melon harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
