In 2015, the countries with the highest levels of palm fruit oil production were Indonesia (133,579 thousand tonnes), Malaysia (97,822 thousand tonnes), Thailand (13,132 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 86% of total output.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of palm fruit oil production among the main producing countries was attained by Thailand (+9.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Global Palm Fruit Oil Production

Global palm fruit oil production amounted to 284,922 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +3.8% against the previous year level. Overall, the global palm fruit oil output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +5.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +11% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global palm fruit oil production attained its maximum volume of 284,922 thousand tonnes in 2011. From 2012 to 2015, the total palm fruit oil output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global palm fruit oil production was primarily driven by disposable income growth, population growth, and growth of baking. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the palm fruit oil output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and a moderate improvement of the yield figures.

The world palm fruit oil harvested area amounted to 19,228 thousand ha in 2015, which was 2.8% more than the previous year figure. The palm fruit oil harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +4.1% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total palm fruit oil harvested area peaked in 2015, and is likely to continue its expansion in the immediate term, following rising demand over the globe.
