Which Country Produces the Most Plantains in the World?

In 2015, the countries with the highest levels of plantain production were Uganda (4,560 thousand tonnes), Cameroon (4,028 thousand tonnes), Ghana (3,902 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 40% of total output.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of plantain production among the main producing countries was attained by Cameroon (+7.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the output figures.

Global Plantains Production

Global plantain production amounted to 31,312 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +2.1% against the previous year level. Overall, the global plantain output pursued a moderate decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures decreased at an average annual rate of -0.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014, when the output figure increased by +4% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global plantain production reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, global plantain production was buoyed by population growth. These key factors are to remain relevant with regard to plantain output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a slight curtailment of the harvested area and a moderate improvement of the yield figures.

The world plantain harvested area amounted to 4,533 thousand ha in 2015, which was almost equal to the previous year figure. The plantain harvested area indicated a small contraction over the period under review, declining by an average annual rate of -1.0% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total plantain harvested area peaked in 2009, falling back in the following year. From 2010 to 2015, the total plantain harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
