In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the plum and sloe output was China (6,403 thousand tonnes), accounting for 54% of global production. Moreover, plum and sloe output in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, Romania (548 thousand tonnes), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Serbia with a share of 4%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of plum and sloe producton in China stood at +3.6%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Romania (+5.0% per year) and Serbia (-3.2% per year).

Global Plums And Sloes Production

Global plum and sloe production amounted to 11,786 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +4.5% against the previous year level. Overall, the global plum and sloe output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013, when the output figure increased by +7% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global plum and sloe production attained its maximum volume of 11,786 thousand tonnes in 2012. From 2013 to 2015, the total plum and sloe output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global plum and sloe production was primarily driven by popularity of healthy eating. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the plum and sloe output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a measured expansion of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.

The world plum and sloe harvested area amounted to 2,567 thousand ha in 2015, which was 1.8% more than the previous year figure. The plum and sloe harvested area indicated a slight increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +0.8% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total plum and sloe harvested area peaked in 2013, falling back in the following year.
