In 2015, the countries with the highest levels of fiber crops production were Brazil (101 thousand tonnes), Viet Nam (92 thousand tonnes), Canada (29 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 78% of total output.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of primary fiber crops production among the main producing countries was attained by Brazil (+0.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the output figures.

Global Primary Fiber Crops Production

Global primary fiber crops production amounted to 284 thousand tonnes in 2015, standing approx. at the previous year level. Overall, the global primary fiber crops output pursued a moderate decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures decreased at an average annual rate of -0.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when the output figure increased by +4% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global primary fiber crops production reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, global primary fiber crops production was buoyed by population growth, disposable income growth, and growth of clothes consumption. These key factors are to remain relevant with regard to primary fiber crops output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and a noticeable contraction of the yield figures.

The world primary fiber crops harvested area amounted to 355 thousand ha in 2015, which was -2.4% less than the previous year figure. The primary fiber crops harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +1.3% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total primary fiber crops harvested area peaked in 2012, falling back in the following year. From 2013 to 2015, the total primary fiber crops harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
