In 2015, the countries with the highest levels of soup cherries production in 2015 were Russia (208 thousand tonnes), the United States (203 thousand tonnes), Ukraine (196 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 40% of total output.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of sour cherry production among the main producing countries was attained by the United States (+7.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the output figures.

Global Sour Cherries Production

Global sour cherry production amounted to 1,504 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +10.4% against the previous year level. Overall, the global sour cherry output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013, when the output figure increased by +20% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global sour cherry production reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global sour cherry production was primarily driven by disposable income growth and population growth. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the sour cherry output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a noticeable curtailment of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.

The world sour cherry harvested area amounted to 218 thousand ha in 2015, which was 5.4% more than the previous year figure. The sour cherry harvested area indicated a pronounced contraction over the period under review, declining by an average annual rate of -2.0% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total sour cherry harvested area peaked in 2007, declining in the following year. From 2008 to 2015, the total sour cherry harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
