In 2015, the countries with the highest levels of sunflower seed production were Ukraine (11,604 thousand tonnes), Russia (9,253 thousand tonnes), Romania (2,701 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 52% of total output.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of sunflower seed production among the main producing countries was attained by Romania (+22.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Global Sunflower seeds Production

Global sunflower seed production amounted to 45,543 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +9.8% against the previous year level. Overall, the global sunflower seed output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +7.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +37% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global sunflower seed production reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global sunflower seed production was primarily driven by population growth and growth of snack consumption. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the sunflower seed output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.

The world sunflower seed harvested area amounted to 26,081 thousand ha in 2015, which was 2.5% more than the previous year figure. The sunflower seed harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +2.4% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total sunflower seed harvested area peaked in 2013, falling back in the following year.
