In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the sweet potato output was China (71,357 thousand tonnes), accounting for 66% of global production. Moreover, sweet potato output in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, Nigeria (3,861 thousand tonnes), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Tanzania with a share of 4%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of sweet potato producton in China stood at -0.8%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Nigeria (+5.9% per year) and Tanzania (+14.2% per year).

Global Sweet Potato Production

Global sweet potato production amounted to 108,326 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +1.4% against the previous year level. Overall, the global sweet potato output pursued a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +0.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +3% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global sweet potato production reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global sweet potato production was primarily driven by population growth. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the sweet potato output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a measured expansion of the harvested area and a moderate improvement of the yield figures.

The world sweet potato harvested area amounted to 8,520 thousand ha in 2015, which was 1.9% more than the previous year figure. The sweet potato harvested area indicated a slight increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +0.6% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total sweet potato harvested area peaked in 2010, falling back in the following year. From 2011 to 2015, the total sweet potato harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
