Which Country Produces the Most Unmanufactured Tobacco in the World?

In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the unmanufactured tobacco output was China (2,849 thousand tonnes), accounting for 40% of global production. Moreover, unmanufactured tobacco output in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, Brazil (893 thousand tonnes), threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by India with a share of 10%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of unmanufactured tobacco producton in China stood at +2.2%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Brazil (-0.2% per year) and India (+3.3% per year).

Global Unmanufactured Tobacco Production

Global unmanufactured tobacco production amounted to 7,059 thousand tonnes in 2015, declining by -1.6% against the previous year level. Overall, the global unmanufactured tobacco output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +8% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global unmanufactured tobacco production reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global unmanufactured tobacco production was primarily driven by growth of cigarette consumption. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the unmanufactured tobacco output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a measured expansion of the harvested area and a moderate improvement of the yield figures.

The world unmanufactured tobacco harvested area amounted to 3,927 thousand ha in 2015, which was -0.9% less than the previous year figure. The unmanufactured tobacco harvested area indicated a slight increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +0.9% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total unmanufactured tobacco harvested area peaked in 2011, falling back in the following year. From 2012 to 2015, the total unmanufactured tobacco harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
