The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 13%. Global production peaked at $27.2B in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Production By Country

Russia (1.2M tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of adhesive bandage production, comprising approx. 61% of total volume. Moreover, adhesive bandage production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, China (208K tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United States (79K tons), with a 4.2% share.

In 2022, approx. 222K tons of adhesive bandages were imported worldwide; growing by 22% compared with the year before. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +83.2% against 2012 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Italy (7.3K tons), Belgium (7K tons), Spain (6.9K tons), Hungary (5.1K tons), the UK (4.9K tons) and France (4.3K tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to adhesive bandage exports from China stood at +8.2%. At the same time, Hungary (+16.6%), the Netherlands (+13.8%), Belgium (+9.2%), Italy (+7.4%), France (+4.5%), Japan (+3.2%) and Germany (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +16.6% from 2012-2022. The United States, Spain and the UK experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, China ($835M), the United States ($569M) and Germany ($517M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 39% share of global exports. Japan, the Netherlands, the UK, Belgium, Hungary, France, Italy and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

Among the main exporting countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +20.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average adhesive bandage export price stood at $23,888 per ton in 2022, falling by -7.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $26,051 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($56,522 per ton), while China ($12,802 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
