Consumption
World Consumption of Disinfectants
In 2022, consumption of disinfectants decreased by -6.3% to 4.7M tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a ten-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a remarkable increase. Over the period under review, global consumption attained the maximum volume at 5M tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
The global disinfectant market value shrank to $14.3B in 2022, dropping by -8.5% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, showed a buoyant increase. Over the period under review, the global market reached the maximum level at $15.7B in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Consumption By Country
China (1.2M tons) remains the largest disinfectant consuming country worldwide, comprising approx. 26% of total volume. Moreover, disinfectant consumption in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, France (476K tons), threefold. Turkey (354K tons) ranked third in terms of total consumption with a 7.6% share.
In China, disinfectant consumption increased at an average annual rate of +14.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of consumption growth: France (+18.6% per year) and Turkey (+25.7% per year).
In value terms, the largest disinfectant markets worldwide were Japan ($2.8B), China ($2.7B) and the United States ($1.1B), together accounting for 47% of the global market. Turkey, France, India, South Korea, Nigeria, Brazil, the UK, Vietnam and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.
Among the main consuming countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +24.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to market size over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The countries with the highest levels of disinfectant per capita consumption in 2022 were France (7 kg per person), Turkey (4.1 kg per person) and South Korea (2.2 kg per person).
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of consumption, amongst the main consuming countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +24.0%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Production
World Production of Disinfectants
In 2022, production of disinfectants decreased by -4.7% to 4.7M tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a ten-year rising trend. Overall, production, however, showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 50%. Over the period under review, global production attained the peak volume at 4.9M tons in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
In value terms, disinfectant production contracted to $14.3B in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 76%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $15.3B. From 2021 to 2022, global production growth remained at a lower figure.
Production By Country
China (1.3M tons) remains the largest disinfectant producing country worldwide, accounting for 29% of total volume. Moreover, disinfectant production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, France (440K tons), threefold. India (370K tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 7.9% share.
In China, disinfectant production increased at an average annual rate of +15.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+17.4% per year) and India (+11.5% per year).
Imports
World Imports of Disinfectants
In 2022, overseas purchases of disinfectants decreased by -15.2% to 1.2M tons, falling for the second year in a row after nine years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 118% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 2M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, disinfectant imports reduced rapidly to $3.7B in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 170% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $6.8B. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of global imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports By Country
The countries with the highest levels of disinfectant imports in 2022 were France (93K tons), Belgium (90K tons), Germany (85K tons) and the United States (62K tons), together reaching 27% of total import. Japan (39K tons), Australia (36K tons), Canada (36K tons), Austria (32K tons), Mexico (32K tons), China (31K tons), the Netherlands (30K tons), Vietnam (30K tons) and Poland (29K tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +22.5%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest disinfectant importing markets worldwide were Germany ($288M), the United States ($214M) and Belgium ($212M), together comprising 19% of global imports.
Among the main importing countries, Belgium, with a CAGR of +18.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices By Country
In 2022, the average disinfectant import price amounted to $2,970 per ton, dropping by -1.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 24%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $3,386 per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($6,344 per ton), while France ($2,250 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+9.6%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports
World Exports of Disinfectants
In 2022, shipments abroad of disinfectants decreased by -9.9% to 1.2M tons, falling for the second consecutive year after six years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 158% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 2.2M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the global exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, disinfectant exports contracted to $3.4B in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 196%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $7B. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the global exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports By Country
The biggest shipments were from China (161K tons), Belgium (155K tons) and Germany (137K tons), together recording 37% of total export. The United States (90K tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 7.4% share, followed by Spain (5.8%), the UK (4.9%), France (4.8%) and the Netherlands (4.6%). Canada (46K tons), Guatemala (43K tons), India (36K tons), the Czech Republic (28K tons) and Poland (24K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Guatemala (with a CAGR of +47.6%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest disinfectant supplying countries worldwide were Germany ($422M), China ($414M) and Belgium ($375M), with a combined 35% share of global exports. The United States, the UK, the Netherlands, Spain, France, the Czech Republic, Canada, India, Poland and Guatemala lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.
Among the main exporting countries, Guatemala, with a CAGR of +39.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices By Country
In 2022, the average disinfectant export price amounted to $2,833 per ton, waning by -2.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $3,189 per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($4,511 per ton), while Guatemala ($529 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
