Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +78.5% from 2012-2022. Taiwan (Chinese) and the Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-1.3%) and Japan (-4.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+18 p.p.), the United States (+5.8 p.p.) and Indonesia (+4.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Germany (-1.9 p.p.), the Netherlands (-3.1 p.p.) and Japan (-12.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. In value terms, India ($118M), Japan ($97M) and the Netherlands ($45M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 36% of global imports. Belgium, Germany, the United States, the UK, Indonesia, Taiwan (Chinese) and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

Indonesia, with a CAGR of +40.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports By Type

Dolomite dominates imports structure, reaching 16M tons, which was near 91% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by chalk (1.6M tons), making up an 8.9% share of total imports.

Dolomite was also the fastest-growing in terms of imports, with a CAGR of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022. chalk (-5.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of dolomite increased by +9.8 percentage points.

In value terms, dolomite ($545M) constitutes the largest type of chalk and dolomite imported worldwide, comprising 78% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by chalk ($151M), with a 22% share of global imports.
