In August 2023, the average fabricated structural metal import price amounted to $3,234 per ton, growing by 6.7% against the previous month. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 13% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $3,567 per ton. From January 2023 to August 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($5,746 per ton), while the price for India ($1,588 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Fabricated Structural Metal Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023
In August 2023, the average fabricated structural metal export price amounted to $4,850 per ton, falling by -7.8% against the previous month. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 8.2% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $6,006 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Australia ($9,630 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($2,542 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (-0.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Fabricated Structural Metal Imports in the United States
Fabricated structural metal imports into the United States skyrocketed to 2.5M tons in 2022, jumping by 19% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +19.5% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +70.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, fabricated structural metal imports skyrocketed to $7.7B in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +19.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +70.2% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
