Moreover, granite blocks and slabs emerged as the fastest-growing type imported in the world, with a CAGR of +2.3% from 2012-2022. Sandstone and monumental or building stone, other than granite and sandstone experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of granite (crude) (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of monumental or building stone, other than granite and sandstone (-2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other products remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, granite (crude) ($1.4B) constitutes the largest type of granite, sandstone and other building stone imported worldwide, comprising 60% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by granite blocks and slabs ($462M), with a 20% share of global imports. It was followed by sandstone, with an 11% share.

Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 15%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $177 per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was sandstone ($294 per ton), while the price for granite (crude) ($111 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Import Prices By Country
In 2022, the average import price for granite, sandstone and other building stone amounted to $141 per ton, increasing by 2.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 15%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $177 per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($360 per ton), while Denmark ($18 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, shipments abroad of granite, sandstone and other building stone decreased by -18.8% to 16M tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 18%. The global exports peaked at 19M tons in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.
In value terms, exports of granite, sandstone and other building stone contracted to $1.5B in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, the global exports of hit record highs at $2B in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +11.8% from 2012-2022. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Brazil (-4.9%) and China (-14.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of India increased by +23 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, India ($654M) remains the largest granite, sandstone and other building stone supplier worldwide, comprising 42% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($156M), with a 10% share of global exports. It was followed by Norway, with a 4.7% share.
