Spain, the United States, Turkey, India, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Germany, Uzbekistan and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +4.0%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($32B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($15.6B). It was followed by the United States.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China totaled +4.0%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of market growth: Spain (+3.4% per year) and the United States (-1.2% per year).

The countries with the highest levels of grape per capita consumption in 2022 were Italy (135 kg per person), Spain (123 kg per person) and France (94 kg per person).

World Production of Grapes

In value terms, grape production amounted to $154.8B in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 14%. Global production peaked at $159.3B in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (13M tons), Italy (8.4M tons) and France (6.2M tons), with a combined 36% share of global production. Spain, the United States, Turkey, India, Chile, South Africa, Argentina, Uzbekistan, Egypt and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.

The global average grape yield dropped slightly to 11 tons per ha in 2022, remaining constant against 2021. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 8.2%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of 12 tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the average grape yield remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Harvested Area

The global grape harvested area reduced slightly to 6.7M ha in 2022, dropping by -2.1% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 1.5%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to grape production reached the maximum at 7.1M ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

World Imports of Grapes

In 2022, overseas purchases of grapes were finally on the rise to reach 5M tons after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 10% against the previous year. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, grape imports totaled $10.4B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 9% against the previous year. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports By Country

In 2022, the United States (718K tons), the Netherlands (479K tons), Russia (414K tons), Germany (356K tons), the UK (272K tons), Canada (186K tons), China (181K tons), France (147K tons), Thailand (130K tons), Poland (127K tons), Hong Kong SAR (117K tons) and Pakistan (117K tons) represented the largest importer of grapes in the world, committing 65% of total import. Bangladesh (116K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In value terms, the United States ($2.2B) constitutes the largest market for imported grapes worldwide, comprising 21% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($972M), with a 9.4% share of global imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United States totaled +6.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+2.2% per year) and Germany (+2.5% per year).

Import Prices By Country

The average grape import price stood at $2,087 per ton in 2022, reducing by -2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 6.9%. Global import price peaked at $2,164 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($3,081 per ton), while Pakistan ($441 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Exports

World Exports of Grapes

In 2022, global grape exports expanded slightly to 4.8M tons, rising by 2.2% on the previous year. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 8.4%. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, grape exports reduced modestly to $8.9B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at $9.6B in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Chile (606K tons), Peru (527K tons), Italy (448K tons), South Africa (415K tons), China (377K tons), the Netherlands (349K tons), the United States (292K tons), India (276K tons), Uzbekistan (235K tons), Turkey (223K tons) and Spain (176K tons) represented roughly 81% of total exports in 2022.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Peru (with a CAGR of +13.4%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Peru ($1.3B), Chile ($1B) and the Netherlands ($912M) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 36% share of global exports. The United States, South Africa, Italy, China, Spain, India, Uzbekistan and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 46%.

Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +14.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average grape export price stood at $1,849 per ton in 2022, dropping by -6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 5.3%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,987 per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($2,613 per ton), while Turkey ($790 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
