Ink Price in Portugal (CIF) - 2023
In June 2023, the average ink import price amounted to $40,498 per ton, increasing by 6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 when the average import price increased by 31% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $53,853 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to June 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($93,940 per ton), while the price for China ($13,770 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Ink Price in Portugal (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average ink export price amounted to $57,074 per ton, declining by -16.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 188% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $68,169 per ton in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($230,677 per ton), while the average price for exports to Angola ($11,883 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+50.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Ink Imports in Portugal
In 2022, approx. 848 tons of inks (excluding printing ink) were imported into Portugal; leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt downturn.
In value terms, ink imports declined dramatically to $36M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 28%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $43M, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

Ink Exports in Portugal
In 2022, overseas shipments of inks (excluding printing ink) decreased by -27.4% to 171 tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 216% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 334 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ink exports fell markedly to $9.8M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 297% against the previous year.
