Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average interchangeable tool import price amounted to $21,978 per ton, falling by -4.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 5% against the previous year. Global import price peaked at $26,236 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($50,243 per ton), while Luxembourg ($4,435 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, the amount of interchangeable tools for hand tools exported worldwide dropped slightly to 983K tons, with a decrease of -2.3% compared with the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum at 1M tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, interchangeable tool exports fell to $23.9B in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 16%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $24.5B, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

China was the key exporting country with an export of around 412K tons, which accounted for 42% of total exports. Germany (78K tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 7.9% share, followed by South Korea (7.9%) and Japan (4.8%). The following exporters - Italy (43K tons), Turkey (33K tons), Spain (28K tons), the Netherlands (21K tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (16K tons), Poland (16K tons) and the UK (16K tons) - together made up 17% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to interchangeable tool exports from China stood at +8.1%. At the same time, Turkey (+22.5%), the Netherlands (+11.0%), Poland (+6.9%) and Italy (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +22.5% from 2012-2022. The UK experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Korea (-1.3%), Germany (-1.5%), Taiwan (Chinese) (-2.0%), Spain (-2.5%) and Japan (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+18 p.p.) and Turkey (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of Spain (-1.8 p.p.), South Korea (-3.5 p.p.), Germany (-3.8 p.p.) and Japan (-5.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest interchangeable tool supplying countries worldwide were China ($4.7B), Germany ($4B) and Japan ($1.8B), together accounting for 44% of global exports. South Korea, Italy, the Netherlands, Taiwan (Chinese), Spain, the UK, Turkey and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +20.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average interchangeable tool export price amounted to $24,287 per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 5.5% against the previous year. The global export price peaked at $28,896 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($50,742 per ton), while Turkey ($8,747 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
