Leather Price in Kenya (FOB) - 2022

In 2021, the average leather export price amounted to $0.7 per square meter, with a decrease of -32.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 9% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $1.9 per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($5.2 per square meter), while the average price for exports to India ($0.9 per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bangladesh (+7.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Leather Price in Kenya (CIF) - 2022

The average leather import price stood at $1.2 per square meter in 2021, waning by -16.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, leather import price decreased by -17.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $1.5 per square meter. From 2020 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($5.8 per square meter), while the price for Uganda ($1 per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Leather Exports in Kenya

In 2022, leather exports from Kenya reduced markedly to 17M square meters, with a decrease of -57% against the previous year. In general, exports showed a significant decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 57%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at 61M square meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leather exports fell dramatically to $20M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a sharp decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 5.6%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $58M in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Leather Imports in Kenya

In 2022, purchases abroad of leather decreased by -17.2% to 386K square meters, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate temperate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 103% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 686K square meters. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leather imports fell dramatically to $438K in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 100%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $1M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
