Lentil Price in Canada (FOB) - 2023
The average lentil export price stood at $841 per ton in June 2023, picking up by 12% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $941 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to June 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Algeria ($1,129 per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($668 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+0.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Lentil Price in Canada (CIF) - 2023
In June 2023, the average lentil import price amounted to $886 per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 an increase of 9.1% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $1,148 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was India ($1,228 per ton), while the price for the United States totaled $870 per ton.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (-0.3%).
Lentil Exports in Canada
In 2022, overseas shipments of lentils decreased by -1.5% to 1.9M tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports showed a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 48% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 3.1M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lentil exports skyrocketed to $1.6B in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a significant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +21.9% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -1.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $1.7B. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
