Lentil Price in the UK (CIF) - 2023
The average lentil import price stood at $1,205 per ton in June 2023, approximately equating the previous month. In general, the import price saw a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in October 2022 when the average import price increased by 9.1% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,411 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was India ($1,377 per ton), while the price for Nigeria ($541 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (-0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Lentil Price in the UK (FOB) - 2023
The average lentil export price stood at $1,787 per ton in June 2023, picking up by 4.2% against the previous month. Over the period from June 2022 to June 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in July 2022 an increase of 11% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,879 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to June 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In June 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to Ireland ($2,133 per ton) and Switzerland ($1,982 per ton), while the average price for exports to Cyprus ($1,639 per ton) and the Netherlands ($1,649 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ireland (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lentil Imports in the UK
In 2022, purchases abroad of lentils decreased by -1.2% to 28K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 41K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lentil imports expanded markedly to $37M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +16.5% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +58.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Lentil Exports in the UK
