Olive Price in Portugal (FOB) - 2023
In October 2023, the average olive export price amounted to $1,275 per ton, with an increase of 25% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated a strong expansion from October 2022 to October 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +5.3% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on October 2023 figures, olive export price increased by +24.6% against September 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 when the average export price increased by 27% month-to-month. The export price peaked in October 2023.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Spain.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Spain amounted to +5.3% per month.
Olive Price in Portugal (CIF) - 2023
The average olive import price stood at $1,044 per ton in October 2023, declining by -4.6% against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated a tangible increase from October 2022 to October 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.1% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on October 2023 figures, olive import price decreased by -6.1% against July 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 an increase of 55% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $1,111 per ton in July 2023; however, from August 2023 to October 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was Spain ($1,040 per ton), while the price for Greece totaled $990 per ton.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+2.1%).
Olive Exports in Portugal
In 2022, the amount of olives exported from Portugal reduced sharply to 53K tons, which is down by -15.2% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 99%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 62K tons, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, olive exports contracted modestly to $35M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated prominent growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +13.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +65.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 67%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $36M, leveling off in the following year.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +57.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 48% against the previous year.
In value terms, olive imports stood at $24M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated strong growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +18.3% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +65.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
