Price for Aluminium Waste and Scrap in South Africa (FOB) - 2023

In July 2023, the average aluminium waste and scrap export price amounted to $1,477 per ton, increasing by 7.4% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, saw a slight curtailment. The export price peaked at $1,683 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($1,844 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($1,193 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In July 2023, the average aluminium waste and scrap import price amounted to $1,002 per ton, waning by -11% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 an increase of 11% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $1,126 per ton in June 2023, and then declined in the following month.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Zambia ($6,087 per ton), while the price for Zimbabwe ($223 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+19.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Exports of Aluminium Waste and Scrap in South Africa

For the third consecutive year, South Africa recorded decline in overseas shipments of aluminium waste and scraps, which decreased by -23.9% to 40K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt decline. The smallest decline of -0.9% was in 2021.

In value terms, aluminium waste and scrap exports declined to $76M in 2022. In general, exports saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 37%.
