Price for Anise, Badian, Fennel and Coriander in Malaysia (CIF) - 2021

In December 2021, the average import price for anise, badian, fennel and coriander amounted to $1,833 per ton, with an increase of 3.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2021 when the average import price increased by 35% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $2,037 per ton in September 2021; however, from October 2021 to December 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($6,617 per ton), while the price for Bulgaria ($968 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for anise, badian, fennel and coriander stood at $2,360 per ton in 2022, picking up by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 116% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($5,970 per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($957 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+6.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of anise, badian, fennel and coriander increased by 2.1% to 24K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight decline.

In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports soared to $48M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 1.1K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports soared to $2.3M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +15.8% over the last three years.
