Price for Apples, Pears and Quinces; Fresh in Australia (FOB) - 2023

In May 2023, the average export price for apples, pears and quinces; freshes amounted to $1,178 per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 an increase of 31% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,861 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to May 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In May 2023, the country with the highest price was Papua New Guinea ($1,836 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($739 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Papua New Guinea (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In May 2023, the average import price for apples, pears and quinces; freshes amounted to $1,901 per ton, declining by -10.7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2023 when the average import price increased by 13% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $2,382 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to May 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for China.

From July 2022 to May 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Korea amounted to +4.8% per month.

In 2022, the amount of apples, pears and quinces; freshes exported from Australia reduced to 11K tons, dropping by -10.3% compared with 2021. In general, exports recorded a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 12%.

In value terms, apples, pears and quinces; fresh exports declined to $14M in 2022. Overall, exports showed a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 19% against the previous year.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of apples, pears and quinces; freshes decreased by -10.2% to 2.7K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 61%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 4.3K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
