In November 2023, the average import price for articles of apparel and clothing accessories, of leather or of composition leather amounted to $29.4 per unit, with an increase of 35% against the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated a moderate expansion from November 2022 to November 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on November 2023 figures, import price for articles of apparel and clothing accessories, of leather or of composition leather increased by +35.2% against October 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 an increase of 93% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $38.7 per unit. From June 2023 to November 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In November 2023, the country with the highest price was Italy ($193 per unit), while the price for Pakistan ($12.6 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From November 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+18.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In November 2023, the average export price for articles of apparel and clothing accessories, of leather or of composition leather amounted to $35.8 per unit, surging by 35% against the previous month. In general, the export price continues to indicate moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2023 when the average export price increased by 172% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $41.2 per unit in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to November 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In November 2023, the country with the highest price was the UK ($95.6 per unit), while the average price for exports to Angola ($8.3 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From November 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Articles of Apparel and Clothing Accessories, of Leather or of Composition Leather in Portugal
In 2022, approx. 1.7M units of articles of apparel and clothing accessories, of leather or of composition leather were imported into Portugal; growing by 5.9% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, imports of articles of apparel and clothing accessories, of leather or of composition leather skyrocketed to $34M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decline. Imports peaked at $40M in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
