Price for Nickel; Plates, Sheets, Strip and Foil in China (CIF) - 2024
In December 2023, the average import price for nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils amounted to $31,548 per ton, waning by -9.1% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 an increase of 15% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $35,915 per ton in August 2023; however, from September 2023 to December 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($54,585 per ton), while the price for Sweden ($18,564 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2023 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils stood at $25,218 per ton in 2022, growing by 6.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 32%. The export price peaked at $41,978 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($46,202 per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($10,976 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Nickel; Plates, Sheets, Strip and Foil in China
For the fourth year in a row, China recorded growth in overseas purchases of nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils, which increased by 12% to 12K tons in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a significant increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +21.7% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +80.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, imports of nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils surged to $341M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a significant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +23.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +86.1% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports of nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils from China soared to 4.4K tons in 2022, surging by 41% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 154%. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, exports of nickel; plates, sheets, strip and foils soared to $110M in 2022. In general, exports posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 107% against the previous year.
