Price for Nickel; Unwrought, Not Alloyed in Germany (CIF) - 2023
The average nickel; unwrought, not alloyed import price stood at $22,817 per ton in July 2023, dropping by -5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 12% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $28,559 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to July 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the countries with the highest prices were the UK ($24,560 per ton) and Belgium ($24,098 per ton), while the price for Luxembourg ($22,059 per ton) and Finland ($22,095 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Price for Nickel; Unwrought, Not Alloyed in Germany (FOB) - 2023
In July 2023, the average nickel; unwrought, not alloyed export price amounted to $25,152 per ton, shrinking by -5.2% against the previous month. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 an increase of 11% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $30,857 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to July 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($154K per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($22,153 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+15.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Nickel; Unwrought, Not Alloyed in Germany
In 2022, approx. 58K tons of nickel; unwrought, not alloyeds were imported into Germany; growing by 3% against 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year.
In value terms, nickel; unwrought, not alloyed imports soared to $1.4B in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Nickel; unwrought, not alloyed exports from Germany shrank to 3.3K tons in 2022, waning by -5.3% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep contraction. The smallest decline of -0.3% was in 2020.
In value terms, nickel; unwrought, not alloyed exports surged to $89M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +16.1% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +56.4% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
