Price for Prepared or Preserved Fish and Dishes in Australia (CIF) - 2024

In January 2024, the average import price for prepared or preserved fish and dishes other than dried, smoked, salted or in brine amounted to $6,396 per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2023 an increase of 5.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $6,646 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to January 2024, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In January 2024, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($9,050 per ton), while the price for Thailand ($5,411 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Price for Prepared or Preserved Fish and Dishes in Australia (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average export price for prepared or preserved fish and dishes other than dried, smoked, salted or in brine amounted to $17,035 per ton, with an increase of 73% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 180%. The export price peaked at $29,479 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($57,867 per ton), while the average price for exports to New Zealand ($3,378 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Cote d'Ivoire (+56.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Prepared or Preserved Fish and Dishes in Australia

In 2022, overseas purchases of prepared or preserved fish and dishes other than dried, smoked, salted or in brine were finally on the rise to reach 120K tons after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, imports of prepared or preserved fish and dishes other than dried, smoked, salted or in brine soared to $770M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years.
