In December 2021, the average import price for wine; still, in containers holding more than 2 litreses amounted to $1.0 per litre, picking up by 35% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in September 2021 an increase of 57% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $1.3 per litre in February 2021; however, from March 2021 to December 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From January 2021 to December 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Portugal amounted to +10.9% per month.

The average export price for wine; still, in containers holding more than 2 litreses stood at $1.1 per litre in 2022, which is down by -18.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 85% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $3.1 per litre in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($7.6 per litre), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($0.5 per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kenya (+0.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

For the fourth year in a row, Tanzania recorded growth in supplies from abroad of wine; still, in containers holding more than 2 litreses, which increased by 18% to 1.4M litres in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +13.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, imports of wine; still, in containers holding more than 2 litreses fell sharply to $1.2M in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 8.2% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $1.5M, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
