Price for Wood Chips, Parts, Residues, Pellets and Other Agglomerates in Latvia (FOB) - 2023

The average export price for wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates stood at $67.8 per cubic meter in January 2023, which is down by -4.8% against the previous month. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 10% against the previous month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $71.3 per cubic meter, and then dropped in the following month.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Denmark ($113 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Finland ($24.5 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Denmark (+15.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In January 2023, the average import price for wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates amounted to $139 per cubic meter, with an increase of 40% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight descent. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $147 per cubic meter in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to January 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In January 2023, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($469 per cubic meter), while the price for Estonia amounted to $33.0 per cubic meter.

From September 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (0.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Exports of Wood Chips, Parts, Residues, Pellets and Other Agglomerates in Latvia

In 2022, overseas shipments of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates decreased by -5.7% to 9.3M cubic meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 9.9M cubic meters, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, exports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates expanded modestly to $551M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Overall, imports saw a sharp curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 20%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 6M cubic meters. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, imports of wood chips, parts, residues, pellets and other agglomerates declined to $82M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $94M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.
