Ferric chloride is a chemical compound commonly used as a coagulant and flocculant. It is a dark brown or orange-colored powder or liquid that has a pungent odor. Ferric chloride is used in various applications such as water treatment, metal etching, and circuit board manufacturing. Production of ferric chloride involves the following steps:
- Preparation of raw materials
- Reaction
- Purification
- Concentration
Preparation of raw materials
The raw materials used in the production of ferric chloride are iron and hydrochloric acid. Iron can be obtained through various methods such as mining, recycling, and reduction of iron oxides. Hydrochloric acid is produced from the reaction between hydrogen and chlorine or by extracting it from salt deposits.
Reaction
The production of ferric chloride involves the reaction between iron and hydrochloric acid. The reaction occurs in a reactor vessel where iron is added to hydrochloric acid under specific conditions. The temperature of the reaction is maintained between 50 to 70 degrees Celsius, and the pH is kept at 1.5 to 2.5. This reaction produces ferrous chloride, which is then further oxidized to ferric chloride by adding air into the reactor vessel.
Purification
The reaction mixture containing ferric chloride is impure and contains impurities such as ferrous chloride, residual iron, and other soluble impurities. The purification process involves filtration of the mixture to remove insoluble impurities and then treatment with sulfuric acid to convert ferrous chloride into ferric chloride. The mixture is then subjected to a settling process where the impurities settle down, and the clear solution of ferric chloride is separated.
Concentration
The final stage of production involves the concentration of the solution to obtain the desired strength of ferric chloride. The solution is heated in a vacuum evaporator vessel, which removes the water content and concentrates the solution. The concentrated solution is then cooled and stored in storage tanks. The solution is then packaged in various forms such as liquid, flakes, or powder for distribution and use in various applications.
The production of ferric chloride requires strict adherence to safety protocols as the reaction between iron and hydrochloric acid is exothermic and can produce heat and hydrogen gas. Proper ventilation, protective clothing, and equipment are essential in ensuring a safe and efficient production process.
