Salt Price in Austria (CIF) - 2023
The average salt import price stood at $264 per ton in August 2023, declining by -29.1% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 an increase of 48% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $373 per ton in July 2023, and then plummeted in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($1,273 per ton), while the price for the Czech Republic ($144 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Salt Price in Austria (FOB) - 2022
The average salt export price stood at $112 per ton in 2021, reducing by -7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 33% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $136 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($862 per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($97 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+35.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Salt Imports in Austria
In 2022, the amount of salt and pure sodium chloride imported into Austria contracted notably to 263K tons, falling by -19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports recorded a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 49%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 325K tons, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, salt imports dropped to $47M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +43.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 50%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $49M, and then fell slightly in the following year.
