Steam Coal

Steam coal, also known as thermal coal, is a type of coal used as a fuel for power generation. It is a combustible sedimentary rock primarily composed of carbon, along with various other elements such as hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen. Steam coal is widely used in thermal power plants and industrial boilers to produce electricity and steam.

Steam coal is classified based on its heating value and carbon content. The two main types of steam coal are bituminous coal and sub-bituminous coal. Bituminous coal has a higher carbon content and heating value compared to sub-bituminous coal. It is the most widely used coal for electricity generation due to its relatively high energy content and lower sulfur content.

Steam coal is typically mined underground or through open-pit methods. Once extracted, it undergoes various processes such as crushing, washing, and blending to meet specific quality requirements. The moisture content and impurities of the coal are reduced through these processes to improve its combustion efficiency and reduce environmental emissions.

One of the key advantages of steam coal is its abundance. It is estimated that there are significant coal reserves around the world, ensuring a steady and reliable supply of this fuel source. Additionally, steam coal is relatively cheap compared to other fossil fuels, making it economically attractive.

In terms of environmental impact, the combustion of steam coal releases carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases, contributing to climate change. However, advanced technologies such as carbon capture and storage (CCS) are being developed to reduce CO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants.
