Strawberry Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2023
In July 2023, the average strawberry export price amounted to $6,390 per ton, jumping by 20% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2023 when the average export price increased by 141% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $7,146 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($9,913 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($755 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+20.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average strawberry import price amounted to $1,087 per ton, with a decrease of -22.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 87%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $2,416 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($2,348 per ton), while the price for Egypt ($980 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (-2.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Strawberry Exports in South Africa
For the fourth consecutive year, South Africa recorded growth in overseas shipments of strawberries, which increased by 36% to 3.6K tons in 2022. In general, exports posted a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, strawberry exports skyrocketed to $24M in 2022. Overall, exports saw a significant expansion.
