In June 2023, the average tobacco import price amounted to $28,066 per ton, increasing by 175% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed resilient growth. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($32,664 per ton), while the price for Uruguay ($18,359 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Tobacco Price in Hong Kong SAR (FOB) - 2023

In June 2023, the average tobacco export price amounted to $37,723 per ton, stabilizing at the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price saw a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 when the average export price increased by 64% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $61,208 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to June 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In June 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Vietnam ($39,152 per ton) and Japan ($32,969 per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($26,104 per ton) and Macao SAR ($30,668 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+13.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. 2.1K tons of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff) were imported into Hong Kong SAR; shrinking by -23% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 56%.

In value terms, tobacco imports fell markedly to $14M in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a sharp decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year.

Tobacco Exports in Hong Kong SAR

In 2022, overseas shipments of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff) decreased by -36.8% to 60 tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 38% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 120 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tobacco exports fell rapidly to $2.3M in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 30%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $3.9M, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.
