Beer Market Size in Africa

The African beer market declined modestly to $X in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Beer Production in Africa

In value terms, beer production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted a modest expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Beer Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of beer increased by X% to X litres, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by X%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X litres. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, beer exports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the largest exporter of beer in Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X litres, which was near X% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kenya (X litres), Burundi (X litres), Namibia (X litres) and Togo (X litres), together achieving a X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Zambia (X litres) and Nigeria (X litres) - each amounted to a X% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zambia (X%), Togo (X%) and Burundi (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (X%), Kenya (X%) and Namibia (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Burundi, Togo and Zambia increased by X, X, X and X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest beer supplier in Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with an X% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to X%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (X% per year) and Namibia (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per litre, declining by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per litre), while Zambia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of beer imported in Africa expanded rapidly to X litres, surging by X% compared with 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by X%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, beer imports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Botswana (X litres), distantly followed by South Africa (X litres), Equatorial Guinea (X litres) and Zambia (X litres) were the largest importers of beer, together achieving X% of total imports. Burkina Faso (X litres), Cote d'Ivoire (X litres), Mozambique (X litres), Lesotho (X litres), Guinea (X litres), South Sudan (X litres), Tanzania (X litres), Senegal (X litres) and Morocco (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Lesotho (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest beer importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Equatorial Guinea ($X) and Zambia ($X), with a combined X% share of total imports. Botswana, Morocco, South Sudan, Guinea, Mozambique, Tanzania, Cote d'Ivoire, Lesotho, Senegal and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per litre in 2022, dropping by X% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per litre), while Botswana ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Sudan (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
