Cassava Market Size in Africa

The African cassava market expanded modestly to $X in 2023, picking up by X% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. Cassava Production in Africa

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2023 were Nigeria (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), together accounting for X% of total production. Angola, Mozambique, Cote d'Ivoire, Tanzania, Malawi, Cameroon, Benin and Zambia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Zambia (with a CAGR of X%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2023, the average yield of cassava in Africa shrank to X tons per ha, remaining stable against the previous year's figure. In general, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The cassava harvested area shrank to X ha in 2023, approximately equating 2022 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cassava production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2022, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Exports in Africa

In 2023, exports of cassava in Africa contracted to X tons, with a decrease of X% on the year before. In general, exports, however, saw a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cassava exports declined remarkably to $X in 2023. Overall, exports, however, saw a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2022, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Tanzania dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2023. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Benin (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to cassava exports from Tanzania stood at X%. At the same time, Benin (X%), Uganda (X%), Cameroon (X%) and Cote d'Ivoire (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. While the share of Tanzania (X p.p.) and Benin (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2023, the share of Uganda (X p.p.), Cameroon (X p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the largest cassava supplier in Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cameroon ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Uganda, with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value in Tanzania amounted to X%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cameroon (X% per year) and Uganda (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cameroon ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Africa

For the third consecutive year, Africa recorded decline in supplies from abroad of cassava, which decreased by X% to X tons in 2023. In general, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cassava imports dropped modestly to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Rwanda dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2023. It was distantly followed by Uganda (X tons), comprising a X% share of total imports. Burundi (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to cassava imports into Rwanda stood at X%. At the same time, Uganda (X%) and Burundi (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Burkina Faso (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uganda (X p.p.), Burundi (X p.p.) and Burkina Faso (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Rwanda saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively.

In value terms, Rwanda ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cassava in Africa, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uganda ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Burundi, with a X% share.

In Rwanda, cassava imports increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2023. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uganda (X% per year) and Burundi (X% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
