In value terms, handmade paper exports skyrocketed to $X in 2023. Overall, exports enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2023 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Egypt was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), making up a X% share of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Egypt increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Tunisia (X%) and South Africa (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. From 2012 to 2023, the share of Egypt and Tunisia increased by X and X percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tunisia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2023, together comprising X% of total exports.
Tunisia, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by X%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2023, the amount of handmade paper and paperboard imported in Africa rose to X tons, picking up by X% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, showed a mild descent. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, handmade paper imports contracted to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2023, Burkina Faso (X tons), distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Togo (X tons) were the largest importers of handmade paper and paperboard, together mixing up X% of total imports. Swaziland (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Sierra Leone (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Namibia (with a CAGR of X%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Tunisia ($X), Algeria ($X) and South Africa ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2023, together accounting for X% of total imports. Swaziland, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Namibia, Madagascar, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Zambia, Togo and Mauritania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
Namibia, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2023, reducing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by X%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2022, and then contracted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
