The total consumption indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. Lentil Production in Africa

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Ethiopia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of lentil production, comprising approx. X% of total volume. Moreover, lentil production in Ethiopia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Morocco (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Ethiopia totaled X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (X% per year) and Algeria (X% per year).
The average lentil yield declined to X tons per ha in 2022, with a decrease of X% on 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the lentil harvested area in Africa shrank modestly to X ha, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021. In general, the harvested area recorded a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the harvested area increased by X%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to lentil production attained the maximum at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Lentil exports declined significantly to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of X% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, exports continue to indicate a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, lentil exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a mild expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Egypt was the major exporter of lentils in Africa, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons) and Sudan (X tons), together achieving an X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Malawi (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.
Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of lentils. At the same time, Cameroon (X%), Tanzania (X%) and South Africa (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cameroon emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malawi (X%), Uganda (X%) and Sudan (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (X p.p.), Tanzania (X p.p.) and Cameroon (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Sudan (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest lentil supplier in Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with an X% share of total exports. It was followed by Sudan, with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt stood at X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (X% per year) and Sudan (X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, jumping by X% against the previous year. Export price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lentil export price increased by X% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cameroon ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country
The purchases of the five major importers of lentils, namely Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt, Algeria and Djibouti, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), committing a X% share of total imports. Eritrea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Djibouti (with a CAGR of X%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest lentil importing markets in Africa were Egypt ($X), Ethiopia ($X) and Sudan ($X), together accounting for X% of total imports. Algeria, Djibouti, Morocco and Eritrea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
Djibouti, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of X%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
