Meat Market Size in Africa
In 2022, the African meat market decreased by X% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, saw slight growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
Meat Production in Africa
In value terms, meat production expanded remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were South Africa (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Sudan (X tons), with a combined X% share of total production. Ethiopia, Chad, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Tanzania, Morocco, Burkina Faso, Algeria, Kenya and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Chad (with a CAGR of X%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average meat yield contracted to X kg per head in 2022, standing approx. at the year before. In general, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by X%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per head. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the meat yield remained at a lower figure.
The global number of animals slaughtered for meat production reached X heads in 2022, remaining constant against 2021 figures. This number increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the number of producing animals increased by X%. As a result, the amount of producing animals reached the peak level of X heads. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of this number remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of meat increased by X% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after five years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The total export value increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the largest exporter of meat, committing X% of total exports. Kenya (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an X% share, followed by Ethiopia (X%), Tanzania (X%), Sudan (X%) and Namibia (X%). Botswana (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of X%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of meat were imported in Africa; stabilizing at 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports showed a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, meat imports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by X%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Egypt represented the main importer of meat in Africa, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. X% of total imports in 2022. Angola (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Congo (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Gabon (X tons). All these countries together held near X% share of total imports. Ghana (X tons), Liberia (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Libya (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Equatorial Guinea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to meat imports into Egypt stood at X%. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X%), Senegal (X%), Congo (X%), Liberia (X%), Gabon (X%), Ghana (X%) and Equatorial Guinea (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Libya (X%), Algeria (X%), Angola (X%) and South Africa (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo, Congo, Egypt, Gabon, Senegal, Liberia and Ghana increased by X, X, X, X, X, X and X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
