In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the African pork market, when its value decreased by X% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Pork Production in Africa

In value terms, pork production rose significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of X%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Burkina Faso (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), with a combined X% share of total production. Malawi, Angola, Uganda and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, shipments abroad of pork decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, pork exports reduced notably to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.

South Africa prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2022. Namibia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Zambia (X tons).
