Sorghum Market Size in Africa

The African sorghum market rose modestly to $X in 2022, growing by X% against the previous year. In 2022, the average sorghum yield in Africa amounted to X kg per ha, surging by X% against the previous year's figure. In general, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the sorghum yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of sorghum were harvested in Africa; standing approx. at 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the harvested area increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. Sorghum Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of sorghum decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a moderate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by X%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sorghum exports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a tangible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uganda represented the main exporter of sorghum in Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Burkina Faso (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Sudan (X tons). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Cameroon (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons) - each finished at a X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sorghum exports from Uganda stood at X%. At the same time, Cameroon (X%), Tanzania (X%), Burkina Faso (X%), Ethiopia (X%) and Sudan (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cameroon emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uganda (X p.p.), Tanzania (X p.p.), Burkina Faso (X p.p.), Sudan (X p.p.), Cameroon (X p.p.) and Ethiopia (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Uganda ($X), Tanzania ($X) and South Africa ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising X% of total exports. Sudan, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso and Cameroon lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

Ethiopia, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

For the third consecutive year, Africa recorded decline in purchases abroad of sorghum, which decreased by X% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sorghum imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kenya (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Eritrea (X tons), South Sudan (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Somalia (X tons), Rwanda (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) represented roughly X% of total imports in 2022. Madagascar (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
