Exports in the EU

In 2022, the amount of cigarettes containing tobacco exported in the European Union rose slightly to X units, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Overall, exports, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco exports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Poland represented the main exporting country with an export of about X units, which accounted for X% of total exports. Lithuania (X units) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Germany (X%), Romania (X%), the Czech Republic (X%), Portugal (X%), the Netherlands (X%) and Greece (X%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cigarettes containing tobacco exports from Poland stood at X%. At the same time, Lithuania (X%), Portugal (X%), the Czech Republic (X%) and Romania (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lithuania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Greece experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (X%) and the Netherlands (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In Poland, cigarettes containing tobacco exports increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (X% per year) and Lithuania (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to less than $X per thousand units, declining by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco imports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the five major importers of cigarettes containing tobacco, namely Germany, Italy, Spain, France and the Netherlands, represented more than half of total import. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X units), achieving a X% share of total imports. Bulgaria (X units), Austria (X units), Greece (X units), Belgium (X units), Slovakia (X units), Luxembourg (X units) and Hungary (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
