The global nickel ore market expanded significantly to $X in 2021, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a deep setback. Global consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Nickel Ore Production

In value terms, nickel ore production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 43%. Global production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Nickel Ore Exports

Exports

For the third consecutive year, the global market recorded growth in shipments abroad of nickel ores and concentrates, which increased by 12% to X tons in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +77.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 64% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the global exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, nickel ore exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 35%. The global exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Philippines prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Guatemala (X tons), generating a 5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to nickel ore exports from the Philippines stood at +4.7%. At the same time, Guatemala (+33.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guatemala emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +33.5% from 2012-2021. While the share of Guatemala (+4.4 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) remains the largest nickel ore supplier worldwide, comprising 37% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Guatemala ($X), with a 2.6% share of global exports.

In the Philippines, nickel ore exports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The average nickel ore export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 16% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 31%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Guatemala ($X per ton), while the Philippines stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+4.4%).

Nickel Ore Imports

Imports

Global nickel ore imports rose notably to X tons in 2021, surging by 7% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, global imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, nickel ore imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild downturn. Global imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

China dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 90% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Japan (X tons), creating a 6.4% share of total imports. Ukraine (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into China decreased at an average annual rate of -3.2% from 2012 to 2021. Ukraine (-1.8%) and Japan (-4.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported nickel ores and concentrates worldwide, comprising 75% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 4.7% share of global imports.

In China, nickel ore imports plunged by an average annual rate of -1.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-2.3% per year) and Ukraine (-6.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average nickel ore import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, nickel ore import price increased by +65.3% against 2017 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+2.2%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
