In 2022, the global other papers packaging market increased by 1.3% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a mild curtailment. Global consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, other papers packaging production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 90% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, global production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Other Papers Packaging Exports

Exports

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of other papers packaging, when their volume decreased by -12.6% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 26%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, other papers packaging exports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +75.7% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Italy (X tons), followed by Germany (X tons), China (X tons), France (X tons), Finland (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Spain (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the key exporters of other papers packaging, together making up 71% of total exports. The following exporters - Canada (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Russia (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) - together made up 13% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +23.8%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Italy ($X) and Germany ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 48% share of global exports. Finland, France, the United States, Spain, Canada, Taiwan (Chinese), Japan, Sweden, Malaysia and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +22.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average other papers packaging export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 25% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+4.6%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After four years of growth, supplies from abroad of other papers packaging decreased by -5.7% to X tons in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +56.3% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, other papers packaging imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +90.2% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 36%. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons), distantly followed by Germany (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Costa Rica (X tons) were the main importers of other papers packaging, together constituting 39% of total imports. The following importers - Spain (X tons), the United States (X tons), Poland (X tons), France (X tons), the UK (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) - together made up 29% of total imports.

Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +36.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Costa Rica (+39.0%), South Korea (+19.6%), Spain (+9.7%), Vietnam (+5.9%), the UK (+5.4%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.5%), the Netherlands (+3.8%), the United States (+3.4%), Poland (+3.0%) and France (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Costa Rica emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +39.0% from 2012-2022. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Sweden (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+19 p.p.), Costa Rica (+5.4 p.p.) and Spain (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Sweden (-2 p.p.) and Germany (-5.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest other papers packaging importing markets worldwide were China ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 26% of global imports. Costa Rica, the United States, Spain, Poland, the UK, France, Taiwan (Chinese), South Korea, Sweden and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Costa Rica, with a CAGR of +37.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average other papers packaging import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 23% against the previous year. Global import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
