Unbleached Sulphate Pulp Exports

For the third year in a row, the global market recorded growth in overseas shipments of unbleached sulphate pulp, which increased by 5.6% to X tons in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +76.5% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 22%. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, unbleached sulphate pulp exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed prominent growth. In 2022, the average unbleached sulphate pulp export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 35% against the previous year. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Overall, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +71.2% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, unbleached sulphate pulp imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 47%. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

China prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 53% of total imports in 2022. From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to unbleached sulphate pulp imports into China stood at +8.7%. At the same time, Vietnam (+13.2%), Indonesia (+6.1%), India (+5.9%), the United States (+5.6%), Australia (+4.4%) and Thailand (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +13.2% from 2012-2022. Taiwan (Chinese), Malaysia, South Korea and Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of China (+15 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Thailand (-2.2 p.p.), Germany (-2.7 p.p.) and South Korea (-3.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In China, unbleached sulphate pulp imports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (+4.0% per year) and Thailand (+3.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average unbleached sulphate pulp import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 9.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 32% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton.
